TurningSixty is based in Broadstairs, so how could we ignore the fact that this August, Broadstairs Folk Week marks its 60th anniversary! A milestone that celebrates not only the longevity of the festival but also its enduring role in uniting generations through music, dance, and community spirit.
From a Tent in the Park to a Town-Wide Festival
The festival’s origins trace back to 1965 when Jack Hamilton, a key figure in the Sidmouth Folk Festival, envisioned a folk event in the southeast of England. Captivated by Broadstairs’ charm, he launched the inaugural ‘Folk Show’ with performances in Pierremont Park, utilising a World War I tent and his own caravan as the festival’s headquarters. Over the years, Broadstairs Folk Week evolved from a modest gathering into a vibrant, town-wide celebration. It now encompasses over 400 events across more than 20 venues, including pubs, theatres, churches, and open-air stages. The festival’s growth has been fuelled by the dedication of volunteers and the unwavering support of the local community.
The 60th Anniversary: A Festival to Remember
Scheduled from August 8 to 15, 2025, the 60th edition of Broadstairs Folk Week promises a rich tapestry of performances and activities. The lineup features renowned artists such as Lindisfarne, Eddi Reader, Martin and Eliza Carthy, Flook, Sam Brown, and Peggy Seeger, who will host a special Q&A session.
International acts include Bangladeshi folk fusion group Khiyo, Zimbabwean street performers Gonora Sounds, and Guinean percussionist Falle Nioke. The festival also showcases local talents, such as Tim Edey, a double BBC Musician of the year.
Beyond concerts, attendees can enjoy over 160 free pub gigs, dance displays featuring traditional Kentish ‘hooden horses,’ and a vibrant craft and music fair in Victoria Gardens. Family-friendly events, including the beloved Hobby Horse Club, ensure there’s something for everyone.
Looking Ahead: Sustaining the Folk Tradition
As Broadstairs Folk Week celebrates its diamond jubilee, the festival continues to innovate. The introduction of ‘Folk Week Presents,’ a series of monthly live shows in Whitstable, aims to extend the festival’s reach and raise funds for future events. read more
